Residents of the San Joaquin Valley, especially those in Fresno County, are within 100 miles of three premier national parks: Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon. On both sides of those parks lie national forests, wilderness areas and foothills. Running through the heart of the backcountry is the unbelievable Sierra Nevada, home to the highest peaks in North America and a virtually infinite paradise of granite, meadows, rivers, and lakes. It’s a high country unparalleled by any other region of the United States of America.
It is paradise if you love the outdoors.
To walk in the wilderness is to lose and find oneself at once, to accumulate the brown and black stains of the earth, become slick with exertion’s sweat and oil, and be washed clean with the surfactants of solitude and adventure.
